Knives, drugs and summer camp

Yesterday was my first 18 hour day since i was a camp counsellor. Clerk-ing isn't all that different. Admittedly, singing silly songs is less a part of my day than it was, and meals are not as regular. But there are still lots of bad smells, no time to pee, and the quirkiness of co-workers and the people we care for. Really. I feel like in my whole life i've always had generally the same job.

Here are a (hopefully) unrecognisable kid on the new ropes course at camp, and a very recognisable LittleE exploring the ball pool.

To be fair, camp never let me cut off anyone's leg, sew canvas into their gut, pull out their intestines or stick them with needles. But problems at camp were never solved so concretely or quickly. At the hospital, something is either a surgical problem, or it's not. If it *is*, it can be fixed. If it's not, then it's not our problem - and the person bearing the problem goes somewhere else. Makes for generally satisfying days. Albeit long days, where you don't get to see your kids much. Only talk about them over lunch occasionally.

Camp is also hiring urgently for the session of August 15-28. If you have a couple of weeks you want to spend beside a lake in Muskoka as a camp counsellor . . . If you know me, give me a call! If not, check out their website and call the camp. It's Girls' camp and Autism camp. Wish i could be in two places at the same time.
