news for the week.

Ophthalmology this week. i liked the carrying about of little lenses and prisms. i learned lots in a short time span. I got up early, and stayed late. I saw abcesses, ulcers, glaucoma, surgical 'complications', cataracts, strabismus surgery, coloboma, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, blepharitis, acne rosacea, and lots of other things that i've forgotten now. It was a long week.

Had a neat conversation about news with a classmate the other day as we were waiting for the bus. He asked me why i liked to read biased sources like other people's blogs. i was reminded of teaching art of 2 year-olds: the kid would make marks on a paper, and the adult with them would put a frame around their work. that way, eveyone felt like it was *really* the kids' work, but they also got to go home with something that looked nice enough to display.

Mainstream news is kind of like that. It's sometimes hard to remember how much influence the frame has: it creates, it doesn't just bring "the real thing" to the audience. "Biased" sources are easier to look at critically. Like a sketch instead of a photograph -- reminds me that the artist has a say, and that i'm not seeing the real thing either way.
