surgery

After 3 weeks of tailing plastic surgeons, i have learned a few things. It is not all botox, boobjobs, and frivolity. No one goes for surgery for fun. Most of what i saw was worksplace injuries: folks who crushed/amputated/burned/wore out their hands in the course of earning a living someplace with varying levels of safety. I learned lots about how to examine hands, and how to find out where a problem might be. I learned the difference between a graft and a flap. I also learned (again) that problems are solved best when they are small. Small cancers are easier to deal with than big ones, and small infections heal more quickly than ones that have spread. I liked surgery way more than i expected to, although i don't have half the attention to detail required of plastics people. Lucky i've still got a year or so to figure out what i want to do, and before i get to look as stressed as the class of 06 has been this week.
