We *Are* the mentally ill
So we're in the psychiatry section at skool right now. Fun enough, and like other folks who encounter a section where they have actually worked, done research, or even talked to anyone actually working or doing research.... i can see some of the flaws. It scares me sometimes, that if the parts that i know something about are so often, well, outright wrong... what other incorrect information have i memorized?
My favorite quote from this week:
"SSRI's - you may have read about them in the newspaper"
Did anyone else find that funny? Um, room full of mostly 20-somethings, mostly women, stressed out med-students. The Newspaper?!?! What happened to evidence based medicine people?
As if a good chunk of us aren't taking them! (or our roommates, our partners, our mothers)
As if doctors & medical students didn't have poorer mental health and more substance abuse than non-doctors.
sheesh.
After that, i send out cheers and support to any of my classmates who talk about their mental health history and help to make this (of all things!) less of an Us & Them thing.
