I am finding it uncomfortable to have to dress up for school every day.

I am really enjoying being in surgery now, where we just get to wear greens all the time, and everyone looks the same. But other than that I’m supposed to be dressed up.

People have been she-ing me at a unprecedented rate since the dressing up began, and the bathroom police are letting me pee with impunity. I feel a bit squeamish about that.

I feel even more squeamish about dressing our kid. We haven’t bought him any of his clothes, so he’s just wearing what people have given us. They are, on the whole, great clothes. Every morning I am jealous that he gets to wear things I would love. But just like dress up clothes for adults, baby clothes are supposed to remove gender ambiguity -- from little people who can’t talk for themselves.

This weekend is his birthday party. We need to find him a nice party dress I think. . . bake a cake and take a deep breath as we prepare for folks who assume that the lesbians are trying to turn their son into a girl, or a queer, or some equally awful creature…
